Cypress Cotton Mill

Context

The Cypress Cotton mill started in 1839 on Cypress Creek outside of Florence. The mill changed names and owners several times and was destroyed during the Civil War. James Martin rebuilt the mill in 1866 and the mill operated until about 1893, when it was consolidated with newer facilities in East Florence. The mill represents an industry that formed in Florence to process the area's largest agricultural output--cotton--into a finished product--yarn and textiles.
