Description

A wedge-shaped brick from one of the columns at the Fork of Cypress.

Context

Made by enslaved craftsmen, the Forks of Cypress is an iconic building that stood from 1830 until 1966 just north of Florence, Alabama. The columns are 30" in diameter. This particular brick is from one of the columns that was destroyed during the 1966 fire that destroyed the home. The columns sit on limestone piers and were covered by a mixture of sand, gravel, and molasses.
