Description

Wooden secretary with two hinged doors underneath three rows of pullout drawers and an open shelf.

Context

This secretary was made by enslaved people and donated to Pope's Tavern by the Reverend Lindon Scales family. Rev. Scales was a pastor in Sheffield and later retired in Florence. This secretary has been the "business center" for Scales households for about 150 years. The secretary originated from the home of Thomas Jefferson Scales, born in 1821. Enslavers from the Tuscaloosa area brought together enslaved carpenters to form a furniture building "camp" and hence the origination of the secretary.
