Context

This trophy was awarded by a Mr. Van Rast to Thomas Kirkman, Jr., after his horse Peytona defeated Fashion at Union Course on Long Island, May 13, 1845. It was created as a lidded cup with two handles that was later modified to a pitcher. Peytona was raised and trained on the horse track at the Forks of Cypress plantation in Florence, Alabama. Thomas Kirkman married Elizabeth McCullogh, James Jackson's stepdaughter. Peytona, foaled by James Jackson's famous stallion Glencoe, won a series of races in Nashville in 1845 for the right to represent the south in a race against a horse from the north. The race, billed as the Race Between the South and the North, drew 60,000 spectators to Union Course on Long Island, NY. Peytona defeated Fashion on May 13.
