Context

Born in 1790 at Moorefields Plantation in New Hanover County, NC, Sarah was the granddaughter of "King" Roger Moore, whose Orton Plantation included 60,000 acres and enslaved 250 people. Her great-grandfather, James Moore, was governor of Carolina from 1700-1703. Sarah married Samuel McCulloch around 1807. The couple traveled to Nashville to make their home, but Samuel died along the way. In Nashville, Sarah married James Jackson (1782-1840) and the two lived on Market Street until they relocated to Florence in 1818. Sarah lived at the Forks of Cypress in Florence until her death at age 89 in the year 1879. While James Jackson had an interest in horses and politics, it is now thought that Sarah used her family connections to help manage the Forks. In 1860, twenty years after the death of her husband, Sarah was listed as the head of the Forks household, which included 1,900 acres and 80 enslaved people living in 14 houses.
