Description

Decorative wreath made of hair, wire, and ribbons

Context

Hair wreaths were made during the Victorian period in America. They were considered "fancy work" and a past-time for wealthy women. Hair was woven around a thin wire and shaped into delicate designs. Often, they commemorated women of a family; the piece in the center may be of the most recently deceased family member (at the time of creation); it would be added to one of the sides when another family member died.
