John Peters was one of the largest enslavers in Lauderdale County. In 1860, the census listed 360 enslaved people belonging to Peters. His house was just west of Florence.
John Peters was born on the Greensville County, VA plantation of his parents, John and Temperance. Peters moved to Lauderdale County with his mother at some point; by 1849, Temperance had willed John the following enslaved people: Ben (listed as a carriage driver); Patty; Fill; Plunk; Jenny; Julia; Andrew; Amanda; Charlotte; Ben (a mulatto man); Margaret; Eliza and her son Anthony. By 1850, Peters enslaved 198 people on his plantation.Inscription/Signature/Marks

The house was torn down in the mid 1970s."
