Context

The mortar and pestle was a staple of the pharmacy in the 19th century. It was replaced by mechanical grinders towards the end of the century. Milner's Drug Store opened in 1853 in downtown Florence, Alabama. It served as a general store, pharmacy, and gathering place for generations of Florence citizens.
