Description

James Jackson's Training Watch

Context

Around 1828, Jackson placed an order with Richard Hornby of Liverpool, England, who had the reputation for being the best watchmaker of his day. Hornby fashioned a heavy, key-wound instrument form 18 karat gold. This watch, used by Jackson at the Forks of Cypress for the training of his world-renowned thoroughbreds, was regarded by Jackson as one of his most cherished possessions. Following Jackson's death in 1840, the watch was passed to his son James Jackson, Jr. The watch passed through several generations until Charles Jackson, great grandson of James Jackson, presented the watch to Pope's Tavern.
