Context
John Peters was one of the largest enslavers in Lauderdale County. In 1860, the census listed 360 enslaved people belonging to Peters. His house was just west of Florence.
John Peters was born on the Greensville County, VA plantation of his parents, John and Temperance. Peters moved to Lauderdale County with his mother at some point; by 1849, Temperance had willed John the following enslaved people: Ben (listed as a carriage driver); Patty; Fill; Plunk; Jenny; Julia; Andrew; Amanda; Charlotte; Ben (a mulatto man); Margaret; Eliza and her son Anthony. By 1850, Peters enslaved 198 people on his plantation.

on Gunwaleford Road. Built by Jack
in early 1830s. In 1860 Jack owned
360 slaves and farmed 6,600 acres of land
and raised 681 bales of cotton, 25,000
bushels of corn and 11,000 bushels of oats.
The house was torn down in the mid 1970s."
