Note

In folder 2017.102.0001 is a Hurricane Reentry Permit sticker that may be a good object to use in an exhibit exploring the impact of Hurricanes on the Keys. This sticker is a red square that is approximately three inches on each side, on the sticker is an image of the Keys island chain, the seal for the Monroe County Sheriff's office and written on it in mirrored text is "Hurricane Reentry Permit/ Monroe County, FL/ Authorized by the Monroe County/ Sherriff's Office/ Driver's side lower left hand corner of windshield." This sticker was given to residents so that they could return from the mainland, while also keeping tourists away from the area so as to prevent them impeding efforts to repair the islands after the storm has passed. This object would be easiest read placed on a piece of glass since the text is mirrored, but that would prevent the preservation of the item for later use. If these are common (no year is given with this specific example) it may be prudent to ask for a current one to display on glass alongside this permit which would be displayed as it is with its backing intact. By displaying a current copy, the context of what the permit says will be visible while being able to showcase how it may have changed. Considering similar permits were issued during the COVID-19 pandemic it may be possible to use one of those as well to describe how the community controls the flow of people on and off the islands in order to balance the major industry of tourism alongside the needs of residents who live here year round.

Note

In same file a similar sticker, this time yellow and the number three on it provides another example to help with interpretation. Research question, what is the purpose of the "3"? Does it describe an island, or a level of priority?
