Tobacco tin

Description

This tin, 50 cigarettes. This was bought in Japan when Boyd and I went there in 2023. Paper label called Airship Imperial Japanese Government Monopoly. Probably a very scarce tin. Wouldn't be too many of these in Australia. Japan's tobacco industry was nationalized in 1904 to raise revenue for the war with Russia and to force foreign interests out of the domestic market. The Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation was created in 1949 to manage all domestic tobacco production, distribution, and the tobacco leaf sector. The Japanese tobacco industry was highly regulated, with a 90% tariff on imported cigarettes, state-controlled tobacco retail shops, and strict rules on advertising and promotion of imported brands. In 1982, the monopoly accounted for 98.5% of all cigarette sales in Japan.
