This is, a wooden tinderbox. These boxes held a piece of high carbon steel, a piece of flint and a section of carbonised cotton. By striking the steel onto the flint, sparks were produced which caught in the cotton and that was the means of early fire lighting. These things were always wrapped up in heavy, canvas oil proof, waterproof materials so that the contents never got wet. Extremely hard to find. In good conditionCollection
