Brass jug

Description

This is a brass jug, that would have had a fitting to keep it on the wall near a fireplace. The important part of it was the wire with a piece of pumice stone, which was kept in the jug soaking in oil. These were ignited and used in the early fire households and early homesteads for lighting all the fires around the homestead by retaining the burning pumice filled with oil as a means of doing it. The stamping on the top of the jug is the Mayfair, Mayflower, which was an early sailing ship. It is one of the very early, trade symbols registered in England.
