Description

This is a drover's cart that used to belong to a chap by the name of J. Marks of Bendigo. He operated in the Bendigo area and north of Bendigo, through Rochester, Echuca, through that area, droving sheep. This was his cart that he used to follow the sheep along with. It is like a modern-day caravan. It has a bed in it. It has kitchen cupboards and a kitchen sink. It's got a tray on the back to carry his wire and fence posts for keeping his sheep at night. There are rails along the side of the cart to hang rabbit traps, tools, water canteens, and cooking paraphernalia. The whole cart itself has been made up using axles from old vintage cars and he's built the caravan on top of it. Underneath the caravan there are two boxes: one for his dogs and the other one would have held chickens, which supplied him with fresh eggs. The cart was pulled by one horse and it is certainly a great example of very early Australian ingenuity and a vehicle with a unique purpose and quite a history to it.
