John Howard handpiece, 1890. Howard was Wolesleys's chief engineer in Melbourne. They had a dispute. Howard was a very valued member of the team because of his mechanical abilities. After the dispute, he went out on his own. He was funded by Gedde, who was a wealthy pastoralist and created the Howard Gedde handpiece. This is a Howard Gedde in wonderful condition. Complete in every respect and very unique because of the low numbers produced during a brief period of time.
An experimental shear of JHowards of 1890. This contains a particularly long fork centrally pivited, driven in the back slot by a tapered roller actuated through ball and socket joint in the crank head. Note also the very large toothed wheel under the lid providing for the easy adjustment. DG&M (A11)Collection
