This one is a William Silver handpiece from Tamworth, New South Wales. DG&M (A17) 1892. It has its original leather cover which is embossed with makers details, and all the brass screws to hold it into the body. Quite a scarce model. This is an Australian design, but manufactured in England. Also has a, a rear end and instead of cogs that has a universal joint, which is very, unique idea.
The rear end of the fork is a round end pin which engages in a hole in a disk in the front end of the driving spindle. Tension is applied by the tension nut working as a sleeve over the fuldcrum pin, which goes right through the fork. Silver patenets were taken out from 1889 through to 1904. The handpiece illustrated appears to belong to a fairly late period.
