8666Description
This handpiece is an alloy body, from Barton Gillette, which is an American company however believed to be manufactured in England. 1901. This is a very unusual handpiece because of the early use of alloy. It is also very rare. I haven't seen other, equivalents to this. It's missing a part of its back joint but the rest of it is all complete. Obtained a patent in 1901 for a roller race between the fork and the top. It should be noted that this fork is fitted with a compensating lever. Tension was applied through a hinged plate under which were three balls resting on top of the fork - apparently a similar idea to that used by Grace, see item 8663
These early alloys proved to be prone to cracking and breaking but this is a very early example of the use of alloy in the manufacture. From the Dangar collection. DG&M (A24)
