Fort Adams Trust

Item Count1,100

Fort Adams, a National Historic Landmark, constructed 1824-57, is the most complex coastal fortification in the United States. Established July 4th, 1799, to defend Newport Harbor, significant enhancements were made to the Fort standing today to defend against attacks from both land and sea. Remaining in active use through World War II, today Fort Adams is best known as the host site of the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals. In partnership with the State of Rhode Island, the Fort Adams Trust, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization charged with operating the Fort, has invested nearly $12 million into its restoration. Guided tours provide scenic views of Newport Harbor from atop the walls, as well as access to the underground listening tunnels, deep beneath.
