Description

Bookmark belonging to the Scottish HBC laborer John McLeod. Made of a red silk strip with a mounted cross-stich piece, Biblical in nature. According to family story, John acquired this bookmark when he left work at Fort Nisqually and went to California for the gold rush in 1849, before returning to the area in 1851. The red silk piece is rather faded and dirty and frayed at the ends. The cross-stitched piece has a jagged blue edge, with the image of a gray cross, red, yellow and brown Bible, some green plants coming from behind the cross. The letters "I.H.S" are stitched below the Bible in dark green. The entire bookmark is 9 1/4 inches long and 2 1/8 inches wide. The attached cross-stitched piece is attached to the center of the red silk and is 4 1/8 by 2 inches.
