Description

Very small, $1 gold coin from 1851 that has had a small hole punched into it and been attached to a gold chain. The coin is believed to have belonged originally to HBC laborer John McLeod and later worn by his granddaughter Ruby McAllister. The gold chain is 15 inches long and has a broken link that has been wired back together. The gold coin is about 1/2 inch in diameter and has a very small hole punched through it to attach it to the chain. The front of the coin has 13 stars ringing the edge of the coin with the image of a woman's head in profile. The back of the coin says "United States of America" and "1 Dollar 1851" with a partial wreath design. According to the family, John McLeod was believed to have had a string of gold coins, punctured, and strung around his neck, which people speculated may have been intended to pay for his funeral rites.
