Book owned by Dr. William Fraser Tolmie during his time at Fort Nisqually: "A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Children" by D. Francis Condie. Leather bound, published in Philadelphia, 1853. Signed and dated on the title page by Tolmie, "W.F. Tolmie from R. Wirtz, USA, 1859". The spine title is worn but legible and reads "Condie on Diseases of Children". The book is bound in a light brown leather, and is 732 pages long including index, + 32 pages of ads for other books by the same publisher. Measures 9 1/4 inches tall, 6 1/4 inches long, 2 inches wide. This was one of the first texts to examine the specific symptoms and effects of illnesses on children and infants, and the University of Pennsylvania-trained Dr. Condie was recognized as one of the top authorities on the topic throughout the nineteenth century.
