Miser's purse, crocheted with multi-colored yarn (possibly silk) and steelcut beads. Dates to the mid-19th century. Miser's purses, also known as string, string, or finger purses, are long and narrow, with a pouch at either end and an opening in the center. They were popular throughout the 19th century. This purse opens with a center slit, accessible by gently sliding the metal bands farther apart or closer together for securing the purse. From end to end the purse measures 11 1/4 inches including the beaded fringe, and the pouches measure approximately 2 1/4 inches wide.Dimensions
