Woven wool paisley shawl, jacquard material, circa 1850. Unknown if Asian or British in origin. Fringed edges, color scheme of orange, red, white, black, and gold forming the paisley and other designs. 68 inches by 66 inches excluding fringe. Small tear in middle of shawl, label with accession number sewed on in one corner. A variety of shawls such as this one are listed in the Fort Nisqually records of trade goods and they were a popular, and functional, fashion accessory throughout the 19th century.
