Description

Black wool mourning shawl. According to donor, shawl is from 1850s Scotland, from the Blackwood family, who was related to donor's great great uncle, Judge Thomas Carroll. Carroll wrote the Tacoma Charter. The family apparently moved to Longbeach, CA, spent some time in the merchant marine, and traveled the world before it found itself in Tacoma. Mourning shawls were known to be in Fort Nisqually inventory during the 1850s. This shawl measures approximately 71 inches wide, and 128 inches long (64 inches long when folded in half). The fringe is an average of 5 3/4 inches long.
