Description

"Clarkes Miraculous Salve" ointment pot, grey marble color, no lid. Appears to have been repaired or restored (some cracks), but is now in very good condition. Inscription on front of pot reads: "Clarkes Miraculous Salve for the cure of ulcerated bad legs, boils, abscesses, pistulas, bad breasts, and gatherings of all kind. Price 1/ 1 1/2, 2/9 & 4/6 Per Pot. Prepared only by the proprietors, The Lincoln & Midland Counties Drug Co., Lincoln." The number "162" is engraved on the bottom of the pot, but no other maker's marks. Pot measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter, and 1 1/2 inches tall including the lip. According to the donor, it was discovered in a latrine at the original 1833 Fort Nisqually site when the site was first being excavated in 1989.
