Snider Enfield rifle (?), c. 1860, belonged to John Work. 577 caliber, smooth bore (?), converted by Enfield from muzzleloader to breech load, percussion cap. Ram rod attached to barrel. Hinged rear sight on top of barrel. Manufactured by I. Hollis and Co., London, the maker's mark is on the beginning of the barrel, and there is a brass circle with scroll engraving and "JW" at lower edge of butt. Rifle is 44 inches long with worn wooden butt 5 inches wide, with cross-hatching at upper end of stock in grasp area.Inscription/Signature/Marks

Maker's Mark: "I. Hollis and Sons, London" and "Makers to Her Majesty's War Department." Also has John Work's initials "JW" are engraved in a brass circle on the butt.
