Cameo-backed sofa, mid-19th century. Four legs on casters, burl veneer. This sofa is likely similar to one purchased by Dr. Tolmie from a San Francisco merchant in 1854. Dr. Tolmie's original sofa was noted on an inventory of incoming goods August 31, 1854 as being a "Shield Back Sofa" for $28.70. Upholstery with black horsehair fabric was completed in March 2010 and the sofa is now on display in the parlor of the Factor's House. Horsehair upholstery was commonly used in middle class homes for sofas and chairs.
Measures 81 1/2 inches wide, and 24 inches long, 43 inches tall to top of cameo back. 17 inches tall to seat, and the feet are 5 1/4 inches tall including the casters.Dimensions
