Recipes from the 19th century made in the Kitchen at Fort Nisqually
"Dine we must, and we may as well dine elegantly as well as wholesomely." - Mrs. Beeton's Dictionary of Every-Day Cookery by Isabella Beeton, 1865
Today at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum, in Tacoma, Washington, historical interpreters cook in the Period Kitchen on a cast iron stove from the 1850s. They create dishes with fresh produce from a garden of heirloom variety vegetables, using the tools available to cooks in the mid-19th century. And they prepare recipes that were commonly found in English and Scottish cookbooks of the time, including many from Mrs. Beeton. The smell of a wood fire combined with sweet and savory dishes bubbling on the stove bring visitors a bit closer to experiencing what life was like at the first globally connected settlement on the Puget Sound.Book Details
