Wood, two-sheave, 7 inch block with metal hook and original rope. The block measures 4 inches by 5 inches by 3 3/4 inches thick. Hook measures 5 inches by 2 1/2 inches and is attached to iron ring, which is held to the sheave by a band of canvas tied with thin rope near the base of the hook. On the block is a piece of paper with Edward Huggins' handwriting. Reads "From the Mizen Mast of the Hudson Bay Company's steamer BEAVER, taken from the original Mast when being made into steamer (from a Brigantine) at Nisqually Landing. 1836-1837. E. Huggins."
A sheave or pulley like this is used on board ships for hauling sails up the mast and helping the rigging function properly. Pulleys are also used for hauling cargo, such as loading or unloading large items.Dimensions
