Description

A Nisqually Indian gathering basket, with rope handles added to the rim. Woven from spruce and cedar roots, tight weave, but shows wear on the outside. The tan and brown colors of the roots form imbricated patterns on the outside of the basket which are now worn away in part. The pattern was typical of Nisqually baskets, vertical designs of boxes connected to other boxes with thick vertical lines. Baskets like this one could be used for gathering food stuffs such as camus bulbs, berries, and shellfish. Measures 8 1/4 inches deep, oval base reflects overall shape of the basket. Rim opening measures 10 5/8 inches by 7 7/8 inches, base measures 4 1/2 inches by 3 inches. Authenticated by Derrel Thiel of WSHS, and dated to c. 1870.
