Description

Original art print of Steilacoom, Washington Territory, dated to 1858. The print depicts Steilacoom harbor, with the Hudson Bay Company's steamship Enterprise prominently featured, alongside several sailing ships and a native canoe with three figures, two adults and a child, inside. The town is set against a wooded hillside, with the buildings set farther apart up the hill and on either side of the town center. Depicts the docks, complete with warehouses. Some of the buildings in the town are labeled, "Livery Stable", "Billiard Saloon", "Keach Store","Steilacoom Hotel", and two American flags can be seen flying from various parts of town. The picture is identified as "View of Steilacoom, W.T.", "From Nature & On Stone by T. Grob", "Print by L. Nagel." The bustle worn by one of the Enterprise's passengers suggests a date c.1860. Original accession records date the picture to 1858. Framed after accession, wood, painted red. Measures 21 1/2 inches by 31 1/2 inches with frame, 20 inches by 30 inches without frame. Steilacoom was formally incorporated as a town in March 1854, combining Port Steilacoom and Steilacoom City, both settlements founded in 1851. Steilacoom had a population of about 500 by 1860.
