Description

Steel bladed skinning knife with a wooden handle. Impressed markings on the blade indicate maker: "I. Wil....Sycamore ST, Sheffield, England". The missing word is "Wilson", an English manufacturer founded in 1750. I. Wilson was the most popular producer of trade knives during the height of the fur trade in the early- to mid-19th century, catering to the Hudson's Bay Company as well as the American Fur Company and the Northwest Company. These knives were used by Native Americans as well as Euro-American fur trappers. Measures 9 3/4 inches long.
