This painting blends two Christian subjects, the Sacred Heart and Jesus as Good Shepherd, a combination popular in Spanish America. Dressed in flowing blue robes, Jesus walks in a green pasture holding the flowering cross, a motif dating to the Medieval period. Blood flows from Jesus’s exposed heart into the mouths of the sheep at his side, symbolic of his role as redeemer of humankind. The focus on the sacred heart of Christ dates to the 17th c. when the Jesuits established its cult. Images like this one resonated with Mesoamerican/Indigenous beliefs about the sacredness of the heart.
