This print was part of a modern series inspired by Hiroshige’s famous Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. The artist is paying homage to Hiroshige’s original series by depicting the same areas, only now the old road to Kyoto and its stations no longer exist and Sekino explores new subjects. Here the modern and traditional blend together as the rich colors, intersecting lines, and varied textures seem to be mere abstractions, but a closer look reveals the clay roof tiles of a building that the title informs us is the house of a former samurai. The subtle slant of the roof, the layering of colors, and the open door affords the viewer a glimpse into the interior of the estate.
