Spanish Colonial painting of St. Rose of Lima, 18th c, Peru. Santa Rosa of Lima, Peru, was the first named saint in Spanish America. She led an ascetic lifestyle and cared tirelessly for the poor and infirm. Befitting of her name, Rosa wears a crown of roses, and Jesus is encircled by roses. Native flora and birds surround her, as legend has it that when she sang birds joined her. Other attributes include lilies, indicating her purity, and an anchor that represents hope and contains a small model of the city of Lima. Rosa is the patron saint of Lima, South America, and the Philippines. Santa Rosa de Lima (Perú) fue la primera santa hispanoamericana. La Santa llevó una vida ascética y se ocupó incansablemente de los pobres y débiles en la fe. Haciendo honor a su nombre, Rosa lleva una corona de rosas y Jesús aparece enmarcado en una guirnalda de rosas. La Santa está rodeada de pájaros y flora nativa; cuenta la leyenda que los pájaros se le acercaban al escuchar su canto.
