These pages were apparently cut from a bound manuscript illustrating the Passion cycle (the Biblical narratives of Jesus’s suffering and death). Based on the similarity of the script, the leaves probably come from the same codex, although they are not consecutive scenes. “The Entombment” portrays Mary and John grieving while Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus gently lay the body to rest. The Ethiopic inscription preceding the image proclaims: “Oh you, whom they have put in the tomb for our sake - Hear us, our Lord and our Redeemer." “The Mocking of Christ” demonstrates the Ethiopian convention of representing evildoers and devils in profile with only one eye showing. The image elucidates the text, which reads: "Oh you, whose head was struck for our sake - Hear us, our Lord and our Redeemer."
