Description

This double portrait depicts St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556), the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), and St. Francis Borgia (1510-72), a member of the first generation of Jesuits and the Society’s third Father General. Ignatius wears an elegant baroque chasuble ornamented with gold embroidery and orphrey. He holds his attribute–an open book with the Jesuit motto, Ad majorem Dei glorian (“To the greater glory of God”). Borgia, who made the Spiritual Exercises and gave up his secular title as the Marquis of Lombay following his wife’s death in 1546, wears the black cassock (clerical coat) of the Jesuits. He holds a skull, underneath which is a piece of paper with the words Ex morte vita - “From death, life.”
