Description

Sitting Bull. Screenprint on Lenox Museum Board. Andy Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop art movement, which challenged abstraction and interrogated and celebrated 20th-c. consumer culture. The Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull is known for his efforts to unify and defend Indigenous communities in the U.S. during the 19th c. Warhol used an archival photograph to create this portrait, which originally was intended for Cowboys and Indians, a series of prints commenting on the myth of the heroic American West. The flatness and bright colors demonstrate Warhol’s signature style and his use of silkscreen, a commercial printmaking technique.
