Gift of Carmen R. Croce, '71Label
The statue was commissioned by Saint Joseph's University to mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council declaration, Nostra Aetate, which rejected the hostile depictions of relations between Synagoga and Ecclesia that were popular in the Middle Ages. The statue reinterprets the medieval motif to reflect Catholic teaching today. The Synagogue and Church are depicted as both proud crowned women, living in covenant with God side by side, and learning from one another’s sacred texts and traditions about their distinctive experiences of the Holy One. The statue was blessed by Pope Francis in 2015.
