In this series, Hiroshige focused on scenes in the city of Edo itself. Here, figures scurry across the Shin-Ōhashi (New Great) Bridge in a driving rain. The print is a technical tour de force, with its delicate black rainfall and the brilliant blue water of the Sumida River beneath the bridge. Notice also the bold and clear yet subtle gradation of the water and the faint shoreline of Atake in the distance. Hiroshige leads the eye into the composition with a series of intersecting diagonals formed by the span of the bridge, the boat in the water, and the misty trees of the opposite shore.
