Here Hiroshige has captured a serene winter evening in the quiet post town of Kanbara. The portrayal of snowfall is imaginary as this station is located in a very temperate area along the coast of southeast Japan. Travelers use a variety of garments to bundle up in the thick snow; the figure on left holds a lacquered paper umbrella that covers his entire head. Traditional houses and snow-covered mountains loom in the background. This is one of the most famous works in all of Japanese art and one of the best-loved prints in this particular series.
