Dressed in a traditional kimono, this young woman is a maiko, or apprentice geisha. Saitō created a small series featuring these young women, who serve tea, play traditional Japanese instruments, and perform songs and dances for guests. Saitō was known for his refined color palettes, simplified forms, and prints that make use of the grain pattern of the woodblock itself, which is clearly visible in the background of this print. The artist adopted a minimalist approach in his artwork, reflected in the dark neutral colors and collage-like shapes used to create the figure.
