Hiroshige’s works often convey the active class divide in Japan, as well as the fragility of life as a function of nature. Here he shows that there is always the potential for a typical journey to turn into chaos at the snap of a finger. In this scene of a tumultuous rainstorm on a mountainside in the town of Shōno, the passenger in the palanquin is protected from the rainfall, while the other five individuals must endure the weather conditions with only straw hats and capes, and a sole umbrella.
