Description

Diana is the ancient Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and childbirth. She is often depicted fully clothed but here she is nude, which correlates to Richard MacDonald’s own study of the human body to show the form and movement of it. Diana is a paragon of female independence, strength, and a unique beauty that celebrates her association with nature and the earth. Her dedication to the hunt implies masculinity but her connections to the moon, childbirth, and the nurturing of animals and forests implies a more feminine and maternal character. Here, MacDonald’s nude sexualizes her, straying from her virginal status and turning her into an impossible beauty standard for women.
