A member of the Surrealist movement, Matta produced works that stand out for their social and political undertones and unique blend of abstraction and figuration. This is a very late work by the artist that demonstrates his spiritual mindset in the years before his death, when he turned increasingly to mystical and mythological themes. The word “eld” is an archaic English word for “old,” perhaps referencing this advanced stage in his life and career, though his meaning remains characteristically ambiguous. Matta produced the brilliant, saturated colors, varied textures, and softened forms by using a printmaking technique called carborundum etching.
