The scapular (from Latin “scapulae,” or shoulders) is a Christian garment originally worn by the monastic orders as part of their religious habit suspended from the shoulders. Over time, lay individuals adopted smaller versions of the scapular as a reminder of their commitment to live and follow a devout Christian life. This luxurious example from Ayacucho, Peru is made of silver filigree, ornamental work of fine wire formed into delicate tracery. It is inscribed with the words “Virgen del Carmen,” the title given to Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelites, a Roman Catholic religious order from the Medieval period. There are two types of scapulars, the monastic and devotional scapular, although both forms may simply be referred to as "scapular". As an object of popular piety, it serves to remind the wearers of their commitment to live a Christian life.
El escapulario (del latín “scapulae”, hombros) es una pieza asociada con el cristianismo y solía formar parte del hábito religioso utilizado por las ordenes monásticas. Con el tiempo, los laicos comenzaron a usar versiones más pequeñas como recordatorio de su compromiso con los preceptos de la fe católica.
