Utamaro was renowned for his prints of bijin-ga, or images of beautiful women. The three depicted here are probably the professional entertainers known as geisha, with their decorative clothing, elaborate hairstyles, and heavy white makeup. They hold umbrellas made of bamboo and paper, probably to shield themselves from the sun. The Ryōgoku Bridge was the largest one of five across the Sumida River. As the site of various entertainments, many ukiyo-e artists included it in their prints.
