Night falls on the town of Takanawa, a thriving port area of Edo. The subtle shading of the stone tiles and bright ocean waters highlight the town’s enchantment and emphasize the artist’s appreciation of Takanawa, a location which the artist visited frequently. While at first glance it seems that the white dots in the sky are snowflakes, some have suggested that they are actually stars reflecting in the water. This series was designed by Hiroshige toward the end of his career but never printed; the drawings ended up in a Paris collection and were finally executed seventy years after his death.
