Description

Cast Sculpture of Artemision Zeus A powerful, mature male god, either Zeus or Poseidon, stands poised to hurl his weapon at an unseen enemy. Anatomy and stance demonstrate the sculptor’s sophisticated understanding of the male body. The god’s identity is debated, largely due to the missing weapon and its presumed placement across his upper body or face. If it is Poseidon, the shaft of his hefty trident would have obstructed his face. If Zeus, his relaxed right hand would have guided the direction of his thunderbolt and left the face fully visible. Long hair arranged in braids encircles the god’s head. The eyes–no longer visible in the original–were made of glass to look lifelike.
